Emilee Irsik, the Emporia State student who went missing on an unannounced trip to Germany last month, resurfaced when she showed up at the Hamburg airport Thursday afternoon to purchase a ticket to fly home.

The person working the counter for British Airways recognized Irsik as the missing American and alerted police at about 4:45 p.m., according to a statement issued by Hamburg police.

Detectives questioned Irsik, who told them she had been traveling around Germany and did not realize people were looking for her. She traveled from Hamburg to Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Rostock and Sassnitz before returning to Hamburg, according to Hamburg police.

She was not injured, and expressed a desire to return home.

Irsik, who is a junior at Emporia State, is studying German and had applied to study overseas in Trier, Hanover and Bielefeld.

University officials said she spoke with her mother, Sherry, by phone at about noon Thursday.

“We are so grateful to everyone who shared our concern and who said a prayer,” Sherry Irsik said in a statement released by the university.
