Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board have begun a detailed inspection of the FedEx cargo plane that crashed shortly after take-off from Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, killing the pilot.

Brian P. Quinn, 52, of Lawrence died in the crash Tuesday, which occurred at 7:46 a.m. just north of 47th Street South between Tyler and Maize, about a mile and a half south of the airport.

In communication with air traffic controllers, Quinn called mayday and said he had engine trouble and oil on the windshield, which made it difficult to see. He asked a controller for a check of the winds, and seconds later said he was going down in a grass field.

Authorities said evidence at the scene indicated the plane touched down before it crashed into a tree line. Quinn was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy has been completed at the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center, officials said, but authorities are still awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said inspectors have completed their on-scene investigation of the Cessna Caravan, a single-engine turboprop built in 1991. The plane has been moved to a storage site for a detailed inspection.

Quinn’s funeral has been set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan.
