Illinois State snapped a nine-match losing streak to Wichita State on Saturday in Normal, Ill.
The Redbirds defeated WSU 3-1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-22, 25-16) at Redbird Arena. The Shockers finished with an attack percentage of .125 in losing to Illinois State for the first time since 2007 and the first time in Normal since 2001.
Ashlyn Driskill led WSU (18-7, 11-4 Missouri Valley Conference) with 12 kills. Setter Chelsey Feekin added 10 with a team-high .300 attack percentage. Elizabeth Field had nine kills.
Illinois State’s Ashley Rosch recorded 21 kills and a .288 attack percentage. Brooklyn Hiafka added 10 kills.
The Redbirds (14-10, 8-6) took control of the match in the third set. WSU trailed most of the match, briefly taking leads of 13-12 and 15-14. It tied the score 16-all before Illinois State scored two straight. The Shockers closed to within 22-21 and 23-22 before kills by Rosch and Hiafka ended the set.
In the fourth set, Illinois State jumped to leads of 8-4, 11-6 and 16-10. WSU cut the gap to 17-14. Illinois State responded with six straight points on its way to a 25-16 win and the match.
WSU plays Missouri State on Friday at Koch Arena. The Shocker remain in third place in the MVC, one match behind second-place Northern Iowa (21-8, 12-3). First-place Creighton (22-3, 13-1) defeated UNI 3-2 on Saturday, handing the Panthers their first home loss in MVC play since 2008.
