Former East High School teacher Kurt M. Brundage was sentenced Friday afternoon to more than 2 1/2 years in prison for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

District Judge Phillip Journey denied a defense lawyer’s request for probation and ordered Brundage, 33, taken into custody after the hearing. Journey sentenced Brundage to 32 months in prison on each of two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. Although prosecutors asked that the sentences run consecutively, Journey ordered that the terms can run concurrently.

Wichita police said the crimes occurred in January 2010 while Brundage was an English teacher at East. Testimony in court Friday showed that the victim was a former East student who was visiting Bundage at the school when the illegal contact occurred. Brundage was arrested March 9 after a woman told Wichita police that he had touched her daughter inappropriately.

Brundage taught English at East High from Aug. 1, 2006, to July 31, 2011, before leaving to teach 12th-grade English at Eudora High School. Eudora school district officials placed Brundage on administrative leave three days after his arrest, and they did not renew his contract when it expired on June 30.

Brundage also was also the assistant cross country coach for boys and girls at East High in 2004 and 2005.
