A convicted child sex offender who escaped custody in Lawrence on Monday was recaptured this afternoon.

Deon Gregory Routt, 22 of Colorado Springs, was being returned to Colorado by a private security firm when he escaped during a meal stop in Lawrence.

Police noticed a man who matched his description about 3 p.m. near 12th and Indiana streets. The man fled and police gave chase on foot, said Lawrence police Sgt. Trent McKinley.

Routt sustained minor injuries after jumping a retaining wall and falling during the chase. He was treated at a hospital and was being taken to the Douglas County jail to await arrangements to transport him to Colorado.

It was not clear whether Routt will face any local charges relating to the escape.

Routt was convicted in 2011 of sexually assaulting a child. He failed to register as a sex offender, according to the sex offender registry.

Routt was being taken from Virginia to Colorado by the private firm Security Transport Services when the van stopped about 5:30 p.m. near West 23rd and Louisiana streets in Lawrence.

McKinley said Routt was able to push his way past the guards and flee on foot. It was not immediately clear whether he was in shackles.

Officers from the Lawrence Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, along with a police dog unit from the Kansas Highway Patrol, searched the area for several hours Monday and resumed the search today.
