The American Red Cross Midway-Kansas Chapter has sent nine volunteers this weekend from the Wichita area to help in providing shelter and other care during and following Hurricane Sandy.

James Williams, spokesman for the local chapter, said the volunteers were sent as part of a huge outpouring and response from across the nation.

“The Red Cross is taking this very seriously,” Williams said Sunday afternoon. “We hope people across the country will take it seriously, as well. This is such a highly populated area.”

He also encouraged people to go to the American Red Cross website at www.redcross.org to give donations and to encourage family members and friends on the East Coast to download a free Red Cross hurricane app on their smartphones that has an alarm, strobe light, flashlight and button the cellphone’s owner can push to say he or she is safe on Facebook and Twitter.

It is available through iTunes and Google Play.

“We think it is a great resource to have. It frees up the phone lines and let’s family members know you are safe,” Williams said. “In the future, we will have a tornado app for severe weather that can tell people where the nearest shelter might be.”

The best help people can provide during and after the storm is simply to donate money, Williams said. It provides the best help during times of crisis.

“I have seen these money gifts in action and know what it means to a family to have a warm place to sleep.”
