A woman was injured and her male companion was arrested Saturday after a chase ended in a crash near 19th Street and I-135, Wichita police said Saturday.
Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said police received a report from Butler County authorities saying that a silver Dodge Durango involved in a felony burglary might be headed into Wichita. Officers spotted the vehicle, which had been reported stolen and carried stolen license plates, shortly after 9 a.m. near 21st Street and Woodlawn.
A chase ensued onto K-96 and later southbound I-135, Brunscheen said, and reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.
The Durango left the freeway and headed for the canal before hitting a light pole connected to a concrete pillar, Brunscheen said. The female passenger in her 20s suffered a dislocated right arm and was taken to Via Christi on St. Francis. The male driver in his 30s initially attempted to flee but was taken into custody along the canal bank.
Andover police responded to the scene, where suspected stolen copper and tools to remove heavy equipment were recovered from the vehicle, Brunscheen said.
The Durango had been stolen from a dealership in east Wichita, he said.
