Speaking of summer

One way to keep a spot of summer is to hear Melanie Mason of North Country Daylilies in Buskirk, N.Y., talk about daylilies Sunday at Botanica. She’ll be a guest of Prairie Winds Daylily Club, and her talk at 2 p.m. is free and open to the public. The “Doggone Daylilies” program will cover Mason’s hybridizing program (her Longlesson Avalon is pictured above), plant evaluation, information on soil and culture – and her experiences with Labrador retrievers.

Designer Q&A

Q: What goes with orange?

A: “I love pairing gray with orange,” designer Kyle Schuneman says. “It immediately amps up the hip factor and brings it into a contemporary setting. It works well because gray has a cool base, where orange is warm. So the balance really creates harmony in a room.”

Along with pale grays and deep charcoals, orange also goes well with dark and light blues and also browns, taupe, cream or white.
