A Great Bend woman who has been charged with stealing more than $100,000 from an organization that flew World War II veterans to Washington D.C., to see memorials has bonded out of jail.

LaVeta Miller, the former head of Central Prairie Honor Flight program, posted bond on $20,000 bail late Thursday night, shortly before midnight and was released from the Barton County Jail, Undersheriff Larry Holliday said Friday.

She was arrested Thursday morning at her Great Bend home on a warrant charging her with two counts of theft by deception. One count was for the period March 1, 2009 through June 30, 2011 and the other count covered July 1, 2011 through July 31, 2012, Barton County Attorney Douglas Matthews said.

A date for her first court appearance hasn’t been set, Matthews said.

Miller was fired on July 1 by Central Prairie Resource Conservation and Development district, a nonprofit that had the Honor Flights as one of its community projects. Central Honor Flight raised nearly $1.2 million to take 1,100 WWII vets to Washington from 2008 through 2011.

Central Prairie Honor Flights was kicked out of the national Honor Flight organization in late May because of various issues, including poor bookkeeping. Hutchinson-based Kansas Honor Flight formed in May and was recognized by the national group as a hub for flights out Kansas. It conducted three flights this year.
