The number of cattle in large Kansas feedlots as of Oct. 1 was 2.23 million, down 4 percent from a year ago but up 2 percent from the revised Sept. 1 inventory.
Placements during September totaled 375,000 head, down 25 percent from September 2011 and the lowest number for September placements on record. It is down 14 percent from the revised August placements.
Marketings during September totaled 310,000 head, down 17 percent from September 2011 and down 23 percent from the revised August marketings.
The percent of September placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 21 percent; 600-699 pounds, 23 percent; 700-799 pounds, 28 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 28 percent.
