Saturday’s small-college football games

  • Published Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at 11:08 a.m.

Jayhawk Conference

Coffeyville (5-2, 4-1 Jayhawk) at No. 2 Butler (7-0, 5-0), 7 p.m. – Coffeyville is second only to Butler in total defense at 328 yards, but the Grizzlies average 63.1 points and have a potent passing/running attack led by quarterback Billy Cosh (1,885 passing yards, 15 touchdowns) and running back Dreamius Smith (894 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns). Coffeyville linebacker Martrell Spaight averages 15.2 tackles and has offers from Indiana, Minnesota and Rutgers.

Other games

No. 12 Hutchinson (6-1, 5-0) at Fort Scott (3-4, 3-3), 1 p.m.

Dodge City (0-7, 0-6) at Garden City (5-2, 3-2), 7 p.m.

MIAA

No. 16 Missouri Western (6-1, 5-1 MIAA) at No. 7 Pittsburg State (5-1, 5-1), 2 p.m. – The loser of this game is on the outside looking in at the MIAA title race. Both teams are coming off their first loss of the season, and Pittsburg State’s lack of a go-to running back was exposed in last Saturday’s loss to No. 5 Northwest Missouri – last season quarterback Zac Dickey ran for 1,165 yards and 10 touchdowns but his replacement, sophomore Anthony Abenoja, is a drop-back passer who has run for 36 yards in six games.

No. 18T Emporia State (7-0, 7-0) at Truman (4-3, 3-3), 2 p.m. – The combined records of the Hornets’ opponents is 9-38, and includes wins over two winless teams (Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern State) and two one-win teams (Central Oklahoma and Southwest Baptist).

Other games

No. 18T Washburn (6-1, 6-1) at Lindenwood (5-2, 4-2), 1:30 p.m.

Southwest Baptist (1-6, 1-6) at Nebraska-Kearney (0-7, 0-7), 1:30 p.m.

No. 5 Northwest Missouri (6-1, 5-1) at Missouri Southern (5-2, 4-2), 2 p.m.

Central Missouri (5-2, 5-2) at Northeastern State (0-6, 0-6), 2 p.m.

Lincoln (1-6, 1-6) at Fort Hays State (2-5, 2-5), 2:30 p.m.

KCAC

Bethany (2-5, 1-4 KCAC) at Friends (4-3, 3-2), 3 p.m. – Friends has used a two-quarterback system almost all season – mainly because neither senior Jayme Bristow or sophomore Derek Racette has been able to distinguish themselves as the full-time starter. Friends running back Thomas Hankerson has scored eight touchdowns and leads the KCAC with 801 all-purpose yards.

Other games

No. 22 Tabor (5-2, 4-1) at McPherson (3-3, 3-2), cancelled

Southwestern (4-3, 3-2) at Saint Mary (2-5, 2-3), 1:30 p.m.

Bethel (0-6, 0-5) at Saint Mary (2-5, 2-3), 1:30 p.m.

Ottawa (4-2, 4-1) at Sterling (1-5, 1-4), 1:30 p.m.

Heart of America

No. 13 MidAmerica Nazarene (4-2, 4-1 HOA) at No. 16 Benedictine (5-2, 3-2), 1 p.m. – With four ranked teams in the Heart of America and just two NAIA playoff berths available, the math for this game is simple for Benedictine, which already has two losses in league play to No. 17 Evangel and No. 3 Missouri Valley.

Other games

Central Methodist (2-5, 2-4) at Peru State (3-4, 1-4), 1 p.m.

Lindenwood-Belleville (4-3) at Culver-Stockton (0-7, 0-7), 1 p.m.

Avila (2-5, 1-4) at No. 17 Evangel (5-2, 4-1), 1 p.m.

No. 3 Missouri Valley (6-0, 5-0) at Graceland (4-3, 3-2), 2 p.m.
