Police on Friday identified an 18-year-old driver who died Thursday evening after he was reportedly speeding and lost control on a curve, striking an oncoming vehicle in the 5600 block of East Pawnee.
Police Lt. Joe Schroeder said the accident was reported shortly after 5 p.m. The driver, Wesley C. Stewart, of Wichita died at the scene. He was on his way to meet with relatives, Schroeder said.
Schroeder asked anyone who might have witnessed the accident to call detectives at 316-268-4131.
A witness saw Stewart driving at a high speed before he entered the curve and knew he wouldn’t be able to keep control, Schroeder said. The car fishtailed through the curve, crossed into the oncoming lane and struck another vehicle, whose driver had minor injuries, Schroeder said. The accident happened where Pawnee goes under a Kansas Turnpike overpass.
