Newton Medical Center has added a general surgery physicians group to its specialty providers with the inclusion of Newton Surgical Group.

The group includes physicians Paul Bogner, Stephen Cranston and John McConeghey, who will now perform most of the general surgeries for the medical center, including robotic surgeries.

Bogner and Cranston have had privileges at the hospital for several years, said Steve Kelly, Newton Medical Center CEO. Now the physicians will be employed by the medical center. McConeghey joined the group on Oct. 1.

Bogner is joining the center from Axtell Clinic, where he had worked since 1987. He has also been the medical director for Newton Fire/EMS since 1987. He received his medical degree from the University of Kansas in 1977.

Cranston has practiced in the area since 1977 at Axtell Clinic, Axtell Hospital, St. Luke Hospital in Marion and Newton Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Kansas and was a major in the U.S. Air Force, where he practiced general surgery.

McConeghey received his medical degree in 2007 from the University of Kansas. He completed his residency this summer in general surgery at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita.
