A Wichita pedestrian who died Tuesday after walking in front of a train and being hit had a medical condition that caused him to “space out,” a police official said Wednesday.

It appears that 41-year-old Cedale Lamont Brown was staring at the ground when he walked past cross arms at the railroad crossing on North 17th Street just east of Broadway and that he was “oblivious” to the approaching train, said police Lt. Joe Schroeder.

There is no indication that Brown, of Wichita, was intoxicated or suicidal, Schroeder said. Brown routinely walked in that area.

Brown was struck shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday and suffered massive head injuries, Schroeder said.
