The Kansas Star Casino will give $50,000 in scholarship funds each to Butler Community College, Cowley College and the Wichita State University Athletics Scholarship Organization.

Jill Docking, chair of the casino’s Kansas All-Star Scholars Fund board, said the scholarships to the community colleges will be awarded to students studying education, science, technology, engineering and math, and those looking for careers in health and health management.

Money will also be set aside for students age 25 to 39 to align with the Kansas Board of Regents’ agenda to increase enrollment for that age group, she said.

The first scholarships will be awarded in 2013.

Representatives of the three schools accepted checks for the scholarships from Docking at a media conference at the casino on Monday.

The gifts are part of the Kansas Star’s $1.5 million annual scholarship fund. The fund already has provided $369,000 in scholarships to the graduating class of 2012, and this fall gave more than $555,000 worth of back-to-school reward cards for students in eight public schools and one private school, and $239,000 for area teachers to cover classroom costs.
