An armed man wearing a “Scream” mask robbed a southeast Wichita Check Into Cash on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The masked robber entered the store, 7809 E. Harry, around 3:30 p.m. and demanded money from the clerk, Wichita police Sgt. Bruce Watts said. He showed the attendant a handgun, then fled with an unknown amount of cash.

The robber was last seen running to the west, Watts said. Police think he may have then fled in a vehicle.

The clerk was alone in Check Into Cash, which offers cash loans, when the robbery occurred, Watts said. The gun was not fired; no one was hurt.

The suspect is described as a black man in his early 20s, 6-foot to 6-foot 5 weighing 230 pounds with a stocky build, Watts said. He was wearing black clothes, running shoes with red soles and a mask resembling one featured in the 1996 slasher film “Scream,” witnesses told police.

Anyone with information about the crime can call 911 or police investigations’ robbery and assault division at 316-268-4177 to make a report.
