About $8,300 was collected during a fundraiser on Saturday for the family of Kimbra Moore, the 8-year-old Wichita girl who was killed last month by a stray bullet.
The Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 3115 Riders collected the money over a three-hour period in the parking lot of Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers on East 13th Street.
“The community did an amazing job,” said Terry Fletcher, president of the motorcycle group.
The money will pay for more than $4,500 in funeral expenses. Kimbra was killed during the early morning of Sept. 4 when a stray bullet pierced the family’s mobile home on South Broadway and struck her in the head as she slept next to two younger siblings.
The money will also help Kimbra’s mother, Cheris Moore, who is out of work. She was laid off from her job at a mall a few weeks ago because she missed so much work time dealing with grief and events after her child’s death, fundraiser organizers said.
Contributions for the family can still be made into a fund at Emprise Bank. Checks should be made out to the Kimbra Rose Moore Memorial Fund.
