A 25-year-old man was beaten and robbed on a street adjacent to the Old Town nightclub district, Wichita police said Sunday.

The victim, who police did not identify, was “punched in the head and knocked to the ground” by two assailants as he walked in the 200 block of North Washington. The robbers took the man’s cell phone, valued at about $300, said police Sgt. Scott Brunow.

The incident occurred about 1:55 a.m. -- about the time the bars close in Old Town.

The robbers got away despite a large law enforcement presence in Old Town. The area has been targeted for extra police presence after a spate of shootings and other incidents occurred among patrons turned out of the clubs in the early morning hours on weekends.
