Democrat suspends campaign for 87th District

Democrat Chris Florquist said Friday that he is suspending his campaign for the 87th District seat in state House because he may have to move soon to California to find a job.

Florquist, 35, said his consulting job for an automotive company in Wichita has ended and he’s been unable to find work locally in his field – commercial banking, exporting and importing. He had previously worked in California.

“We wanted to continue running,” he said, “but we didn’t think it was fair to the voters when I didn’t know if I couldn’t get a job here.”

Florquist’s name will remain on the ballot, which has already been set.

If he does find a long-term job in the Wichita area and wins the race, Florquist said he would serve as a state representative. Otherwise, if he wins and has moved out, the Democratic precinct committee members in the 87th District would select a replacement, Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman said.

Republican Mark Kahrs and Libertarian Santana Marie Talbert are also seeking the open seat. The 87th is one of the districts redrawn this year, pushing incumbent Joseph Scapa into the 88th. The election is Nov. 6.
