Wesley, Via Christi recognized for organ-donor efforts

Wesley Medical Center received the gold award and Via Christi Hospital-St. Francis received the silver award from the Department of Health and Human Services for increasing the number of organs available for transplants, the Midwest Transplant Network announced Thursday.

HHS recognized 18 hospitals in Kansas and Missouri for efforts to increase the number of organs available for transplants.

Representatives from hospitals and the Midwest Transplant Network received the department’s Medal of Honor for Organ Donation for having a donation rate of at least 75 percent of eligible donors at their hospitals.Wesley was the only gold-medal winner in the area.

The other Kansas winners were primarily from the Kansas City and Topeka areas.
