Broadway is once again coming to Wichita — but this time, with a twist.
Four Broadway stars will sing contemporary showstoppers while the Wichita Symphony Orchestra plays the tunes. “Broadway Rocks!” on Oct. 6 features songs from “Wicked,” “The Lion King,” “Rent,” “Mamma Mia!” and other Broadway hits sung by Robert Evan, Capathia Jenkins, Doug LaBrecque and Christiane Noll.
“You get these amazing symphony orchestras that let loose,” said Noll, currently appearing as Chaplin’s mother in “Charlie Chaplin at the Symphony,” which opened in September on Broadway. “ ’Broadway Rocks!’ is total fun.”
Noll was nominated for a Tony for her portrayal of Mother in “Ragtime.” She also starred in the original cast of “Jekyll and Hyde” with Evan.
Evan, a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, will sing the show-stopping classic “This Is the Moment,” from “Jekyll and Hyde,” during “Broadway Rocks!”
“It’s just a great cast,” said Evan, who has performed the pivotal role of Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables.” “It’s a real fun, upbeat show. I just love performing in front of symphony orchestras.”
LaBrecque’s leading roles include those in “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miserables.” He will sing “Music of the Night” from “The Phantom of the Opera” for “Broadway Rocks!”
Jenkins starred on Broadway in “The Look of Love” and “The Civil War.” She has also appeared in many television shows.
“These four singers are unbelievably gifted,” said Don Reinhold, the symphony’s executive director.
The Broadway singers also will be backed by the Butler Community College Concert Choir. Thomas Douglas, Music Theatre of Wichita music director and conductor, will guest conduct.
“Broadway Rocks!” is the first of three Pops concerts the symphony will perform in the 2012-2013 season. The second, which Reinhold added, will feature “America’s Got Talent” finalists The Texas Tenors on Feb. 28 and a Simon and Garfunkel tribute on May 4.
“We want to give the public the music they want the way they want it,” Reinhold said.
