Wichita State volleyball in search of big win on road

Wichita State’s volleyball team is good enough to win without maximum efforts from its lineup. Coach Chris Lamb, however, doesn’t want to exist that way all season.

With the Shockers heading on the road to play Bradley and Northern Iowa, it is a good time for them to give a more complete performance.

“I’m still waiting for that night when everything seems to be clicking,” Lamb said. “I’m still searching for consistency at a high level from the team.”

WSU’s offense hit a high gear in weekend sweeps of Evansville and Southern Illinois. Solid serve-receive and good passing helped WSU hit a season-high .374 against SIU. The Shockers rank third in MVC games with an opponent attack percentage of .165. Lamb isn’t satisfied with either.

“I’m a little disapointed that certain hitters are doing well against us,” he said. “But at the end of the day, we’ve been holding teams to a less-than-comfortable hitting percentage.”

The Shockers (9-4, 3-1 MVC) can pick up the conference season’s first big road win on Saturday at three-time defending MVC champion UNI (11-5, 3-0). The Panthers, with four losses to ranked teams, are a different team without setter Bre Payton, a three-time MVC Player of the Year, and All-MVC middle Michelle Burow. WSU hasn’t won in Cedar Falls since 2008.

“They seem to have come back to the Valley with the number of highlight-reel defensive plays,” Lamb said. “I don’t believe that defensively they are as spectacular as in recent history. That happens when you graduate amazing defenders.”

Worth noting — Bradley (6-8, 0-3) has lost five straight matches and eight of nine. The Braves have lost 18 straight to the Shockers.… Northern Iowa setter Molly Turk ranks third in the MVC with 10.80 assists. Outside hitter Megan Lehman ranks seventh with an average of 3.29 kills a set. Outside hitter Amy Braun averages 3.02 kills and 3.82 digs.… WSU has lost eight straight to the Panthers, including three last season.
