IKEA, the popular Swedish home furnishings retailer, will announce plans Thursday morning for a proposed store in Merriam.

Expected to open in the fall of 2014, the proposed IKEA Merriam would be the first IKEA store in Kansas. The store will be built in Merriam, at the southeast corner of Interstate 35 and Johnson Drive, at 6030 Eby Ave.

There are 38 IKEA stores in the U.S., and the closest ones to the Kansas City area are in Texas, Colorado, Minnesota and Chicago. More details about the development of the store will be announced at the 10:30 a.m. press conference at the site of the proposed store.
