A 19-year-old man made his first appearance in a McPherson County court Monday on a charge that he aided and abetted second-degree murder in the death of a 26-year-old Tabor College football player.

Alton Lamont Franklin was being held in the McPherson County Jail on a $500,000 bond, said McPherson Police Chief Robert McClarty.

Franklin appeared in court, by video, on the amended charge. Franklin is a Dallas native who was a McPherson College student; the college said Sunday that it had suspended him.

Franklin was arrested in the death of Brandon Brown, a defensive lineman for Tabor College, in Hillsboro. Brown was a transfer from a California college.

Brown was found shortly after 4 a.m. Sept. 16 in McPherson after police responded to a disturbance call. He had been beaten and was unconscious. He died at a Wichita hospital on Saturday night after being kept on life support.

In a statement Monday, McClarty said the investigation into the case is “active and ongoing” and involves McPherson police, the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call McPherson police at 620-245-1200 or Crime Stoppers of McPherson County, 620-241-1122.
