A man who drowned while trying to save a struggling swimmer at the Lake of the Ozarks on Friday has been identified as Ernest C. Ekstam, 67, of Gravois Mills, Mo., according to the Missouri Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division.

Ekstam jumped into the Lake of the Ozarks near the .3 mile marker of the Gravois Arm to help a struggling swimmer about 6 p.m. Friday. Ekstam then ran into problems and started to struggle in the water.

Although he was thrown a life jacket, Ekstam lost conscious. He was pulled into another boat that was passing by, but could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
