STATE/JUNIOR COLLEGES Last-gasp TD lifts Friends to victory

Friends defeated McPherson 18-17 on Saturday, thanks to a game-winning touchdown catch by Falcons’ offensive tackle Cortlin Couture off a pass deflection by a McPherson defensive lineman with nine seconds left. The win improved the Falcons to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in KCAC play.

Trailing 17-12 with under one minute to play, backup quarterback Jayme Bristow found Chris Allen on a deep route that put the Falcons on the McPherson 2-yard line. After a failed quarterback sneak, Bristow’s pass was deflected at the line and Couture, aware the ball was up for grabs, made the catch.

“It was fitting end for us because we struggled all game with McPherson, who has a heck of a defense,” Friends coach Monty Lewis said. “It was a wild game. I’ve got to tip my hat to McPherson.”

Friends middle linebacker Marcus Carter made a big play on defense in the third quarter, intercepting a Jake Snodgrass pass at the goal line and returning it 100 yards for a touchdown.

Lewis replaced starter Derek Racette with Bristow after Racette struggled throwing the ball.

“I just felt like it was time for a switch because we weren’t getting the push we needed,” Lewis said. “What it comes down to is he gave (Allen) a chance to make a play.”

The game was moved from a scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff to 1 p.m. to accomodate extra security after a Tabor football player was found beaten and unconscious last Sunday in McPherson. A McPherson College student has been arrested in the case.
