A local motorcyclist is in critical condition following a single-vehicle accident near Derby early Saturday evening.
Authorities say alcohol may be a contributing factor in the crash that left a 49-year-old Wichita-area man in “extremely critical condition,” Sedgwick County sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Hargus said at the scene. Hargus would not elaborate on the man’s injuries, but a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said he suffered an “open skull fracture.”
The crash happened around 5:40 p.m. in the 9900 block of 63rd Street South, between Rock and Webb Roads.
Witnesses told authorities the man was traveling eastbound “at an extremely high rate of speed” when he lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected, Hargus said. The motorcycle continued its course, jumped the curb and crashed into a fence south of 63rd.
First responders found the man lying on the pavement several yards west of the motorcycle, Hargus said. The motorcyclist was transported to Wesley Medical Center for treatment, authorities said. He had no passengers when the accident occurred.
Hargus said he could not immediately provide an estimate of the man’s speed at the time of the accident.
“It will be a little while yet until they analyze the measurement and skid marks,” he said.
