Marshalls

Address: 2441 N. Maize Road, Suite 401 (in NewMarket Square)

Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday

Jerry Jones said he’s tried for a long time to get Marshalls to come to his northwest Wichita retail development.

On Thursday, he won’t have to try anymore.

That’s when the discount retailer of designer clothing, accessories and home ware will open its first Wichita store in a 23,127-square-foot building in NewMarket Square.

The building, at 2441 N. Maize, Suite 401, was previously a Borders bookstore, which closed last September.

The store will employ 60 full- and part-time workers. Its grand opening starts at 8 a.m. Thursday.

“The fact that this is the first and only Marshalls in the market we feel will bring a lot of new customers to NewMarket Square,” said Jones, vice president for commercial development at Slawson Cos., the developer of NewMarket Square.

Marshalls is owned by Massachusetts-based TJX Cos. TJX also owns T. J. Maxx, which has stores in Eastgate Plaza at Kellogg and Rock and at Westgate Market at Kellogg and Dugan.

Like T.J. Maxx, Marshalls offers discounted designer clothing. But there are significant differences, said Carrie Garfield, a Marshalls spokeswoman.

Garfield said Marshalls has a bigger shoe department than T. J. Maxx. Unlike T.J. Maxx, Marshalls has men’s and children’s shoes, she said. It also has a special section for teens and young women called the Cube, and “a completely different selection of merchandise” than T.J. Maxx, Garfield said.

Garfield said there aren’t plans for additional Marshalls stores in Wichita, at least through next year.

Jones said he’s glad several years of discussions are ending this way.

“We’d been talking to them for several years, trying to find a spot for them,” he said.

Jones considers Marshalls an anchor tenant and an important draw for NewMarket, which has 830,000 square feet of retailers and restaurants, including Target, Best Buy and Petco.
