An 18-year-old man was shot with a rifle at close range during a robbery at his home in south Wichita early Tuesday morning, police said.

Two armed men entered the house in the 2200 block of South Fountain - southeast of Mount Vernon and George Washington Boulevard - at about 5:30 a.m., Lt. Joe Schroeder said.

The men, who appeared to be in their late teens, opened an overhead garage door to get into the garage, which is being converted into a bedroom, Schroeder said. One was armed with a small-caliber rifle, the other with a shotgun.

They awakened a 17-year-old boy sleeping in the garage and then forced their way into the house, Schroeder said.

There, they confronted the teen’s older brother, who was shot when he refused their demands for money and property. They then took a television and left the house, running south on Broadview, Schroeder said.

A 16-year-old brother who was awakened by the gunshot went outside to see where the robbers went. He told police the robber with the rifle wore a white hoodie with the hood pulled up tight around his head. Both suspects were about 5-feet-8 with medium builds, he said.

The victim was shot from a distance of less than 10 feet and suffered a through-and-through wound in the lower abdomen, Schroeder said. He was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

The boys live at the house with their mother, who was not home at the time of the robbery.
