A one-vehicle crash in rural Harvey County killed one person and injured three others Sunday night, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 9 p.m. in the 8200 block of North Woodbury, which is northeast of Buhler, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton reported. Cory Rutschman, 18, of Newton, apparently lost control of the extended-cab pickup he was driving along a series of curves and went down a 20-foot embankment into Blaze Fork Creek.

The pickup landed on its side in the creek. Rutschman’s 39-year-old mother, Beverly, of Hesston, was partially ejected from the vehicle and pinned under the water, Walton said. Beverly was taken to the hospital in Hutchinson, where she was pronounced dead.

Cory Rutschman is being treated at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in Wichita, Walton said. One passenger, 18-year-old Spencer Fast of Moundridge, is also being treated at St. Francis. The other surviving passenger, 19-year-old Chad Janzen of Hesston, is in critical condition at St. Francis.
