False alarm causes evacuation of casino

A false fire alarm tripped by a “construction issue” caused officials to call for casino patrons and staff to evacuate the Kansas Star Casino on Friday afternoon.

Kansas Star public relations manager Megan Strader declined comment on the number of people evacuated shortly after 3 p.m. But she said Friday that the evacuation — the casino’s first due to a fire alarm — took less than 10 minutes.

“We were tested today, and everything went very well,” she said, noting that the casino’s procedures call for an evacuation each time an alarm sounds.

Authorities said fire crews from Mulvane, Derby and Sedgwick County were dispatched to the casino, 777 Kansas Star Drive in Mulvane, as a precaution, but the call was disregarded after first responders found no smoke or fire on the scene.
