A 23-year-old man is being evaluated at a local hospital after he pulled a knife on a police officer sent to check on his welfare early Thursday morning, police said.

The officer was sent to the man’s residence in the 900 block of North Grove shortly after 3:30 a.m. Thursday after the man called a mental health professional and indicated he planned to hurt himself, Nolte said.

The man was outside his house and produced a knife as the officer approached, Nolte said. The officer retreated to cover quickly, ordering the man to drop the weapon. The man eventually complied, and he was taken into custody.

When asked why the officer didn’t fire when the man pulled out a knife, Nolte said, “The officer was able to get to a safe location, and was able to resolve the conflict without having to use force.”

Karen Jackson was shot to death on July 10 when authorities say she came at officers with a knife. DeJuan Colbert was shot and killed on Oct. 30 when he charged at officers with a knife as they arrived at the Dollar General store he was robbing.

But not every situation involving a knife is the same, Nolte said. Officers have to make split-second decisions based on the circumstances.

The man did not come at the officer with a knife Thursday morning, Nolte said, and he complied when ordered to drop the weapon. He has been admitted to Via Christi Hospital on St. Joseph for a mental evaluation.
