Five arrested after brief police chase

Five people were arrested — including convicted felons with guns — after they fled from an attempted traffic stop late Monday night, police said.

An officer tried to pull over a Hyundai Sonata in the 1600 block of North Chautauqua shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday, Lt. Joe Schroeder said.

The driver refused to cooperate, however, and took off.

As the chase unfolded, other officers put down spike strips. The driver hit the strips and tires deflated, Schroeder said. The vehicle came to a stop in the 200 block of North Belmont, more than two miles from where the attempted traffic stop took place.

Two men jumped out of the Sonata and tried to escape, Schroeder said, but they were caught a short time later. The other three men stayed in the vehicle.

Officers found marijuana and two loaded guns in the car, he said. Three of the men were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a felon. The driver was booked for numerous traffic violations as well.
