A 3-year-old Hutchinson boy was flown to Wichita by medical helicopter Sunday after he was struck by a van, authorities said.

The accident occurred shortly before noon in the 100 block of West 10th Avenue in Hutchinson, Sgt. Brian Hirt said in a prepared statement. Katherine Lewis, 31, of Hutchinson was driving east when the boy climbed off a Ford Ranger pickup that parked on the south side of the street.

He stepped into the path of the van and was struck by the right front fender, Hirt said. He was flown to Wesley Medical Center for treatment, where he is listed in fair condition Monday morning.

The accident remains under investigation, Hirt said.
