Wichita police have arrested a woman they think may be responsible for more than 30 tire slashings in southeast Wichita within the past month.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday, a resident in the 700 block of South Mission, near Kellogg and Woodlawn, saw a woman crouch beside his car and then heard a loud hissing sound and saw his car tire rapidly deflating, reported Sgt. Bart Brunscheen, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

The man called 911 and started following the woman who turned around when he was within 10 feet and threatened him with a knife. He began yelling “tire slasher, tire slasher,” which drew the attention of several neighbors. And when one of those men, who had also called 911 tried to approach her, the woman turned and also threatened him with her knife.

The 38-year-old woman was taken into custody and police seized the knife.

“The knife had an oily residue on it. The tire was brand new and the knife was compared with the width of the slit in the tire,” Brunscheen said. “We believe there were several other cases of vandalism due to tire slashing. We believe she may be responsible for more. Detectives are investigating the case. We have submitted the knife to CSI.”

If anyone has information that might aid in the investigation, Brunscheen said, they are encouraged to call 316-268-4646.
