Wichita State volleyball edges SMU in five sets

Wichita State had to rally for a five-set volleyball victory over Southern Methodist at the SMU Classic on Thursday night in Dallas.

SMU won the first and third sets before the Shockers recovered and won 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-6).

SMU dominated the last half of the first set, pulling away after WSU closed within 8-7. The Shockers trailed 9-7 in the second set, but WSU took control with a 5-0 run midway through the set. Ashley Andrade ended the set with back-to-back kills. WSU led the third set 10-5 but couldn’t hold on. And WSU trailed 18-16 in the fourth set before recovering. WSU led from the outset in the final set. A block by Elizabeth Field and Chelsey Feekin made it 8-3, and aces by Emily Adney and Jackie Church helped close out the game.

Adney had 13 kills and Andrade had 12 for WSU. Feekin had 42 assists, six kills and six digs, and Church had 22 digs.

The Shockers will play Auburn on Friday afternoon in Dallas.
