Wichita State continues to bulk up its pitching staff for the future.

Forney (Texas) High left-hander Cody Tyler recently gave WSU an oral commitment, making him the sixth pitcher from the Class of 2013. He visited WSU last month.

“Everything was awesome,” Tyler said. “Everybody was so nice and welcoming that when I left I knew that’s where I was going to be going.”

Tyler (6-foot, 165 pounds) was an All-District 15 pitcher in Class 4A for Forney last spring. He said he throws a fastball, curve and a changeup. He also throws what he calls a drop-slot fastball to lefty hitters.

“It’s sidearm,” he said. “It’s a little strange, but it’s one of those things you’re really not expecting.”

Tyler also visited Dallas Baptist and Seminole (Okla.) State College. His visit with WSU strength and conditioning coordinator Kerry Rosenboom also helped his decision.

“He really seemed like he knew what he was talking about,” Tyler said. “I want to play as long as I can, so knowing I’ll have a good trainer working with me, that’s a huge positive.”

Tyler joins Northwest’s Mitchell McIntyre; Austin Gardner, from Coppell (Texas); Waverly (Neb.) pitcher Sam Tewes; Grayson County (Texas) College reliever Ray Ashford; and Pine Creek (Colo.) lefty Reagan Biechler. Infielders Nathan Winfrey from Liberty (Mo.) High and Michael Burns of Columbine (Colo.) High also plan to sign when the signing period begins Nov. 14.
