An 8-year-old girl has died after being struck by a stray bullet during an exchange of gunfire at a south Wichita mobile home park early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The girl was found inside her home at Oaks Mobile Home Park at 3041 S. Broadway and pronounced dead at 4:09 a.m., a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. Police were responding to a report of shots fired and initially came into contact with a woman who had been grazed in the head by a bullet at the park just south of the John Mack Bridge.

She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of an injury not considered life-threatening. As officers were checking other mobile homes in the park to see if they had been hit by bullets, they found the girl, the supervisor said.

Initial reports indicate several people were involved in the exchange of gunfire, the supervisor said. Several people have been taken in for questioning. It’s not clear at this point what prompted the gunfire, the supervisor said.

Law enforcement officers are looking for a white man in a black Ford Focus with the license plate 511 EVP in connection with the shooting. He was believed to be armed.

More information on the incident is expected to be released at a police briefing later Tuesday morning at City Hall.
