An 18-year-old man is hospitalized with a fractured skull and police are looking for a group of people that assaulted him in Old Town early Friday morning, authorities said.

The victim was out with a 19-year-old friend in the 200 block of north Rock Island at about 2 a.m. Friday when they were confronted by the group, Lt. Doug Nolte said. Someone in the group was upset with the 19-year-old about a prior argument and confronted him about it.

The group of about 20 teens then began to beat the 19-year-old, Nolte said, and when his friend stepped in to try to stop the attack he was beaten as well. Both victims were knocked unconscious.

The younger of the two was taken to a local hospital, where he was found to have a skull fracture and bleeding on the brain. The older victim said the people in the group appeared to be between 15 and18 years of age.

Police are looking for a known suspect, but they would also welcome calls from anyone who saw the attack and might be able to identify others in the group, Nolte said.

The attackers stole the cellphones of both victims, police say, and they may have videotaped the incident and posted it on Facebook somewhere. Anyone with information on the incident should call 316-268-4135.
