United Way taking calls for Laid-Off Workers Center

United Way of the Plains is taking calls through Friday for the September session of the Laid-Off Workers Center.

People must call United Way’s information number by dialing 211 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. To qualify for help, laid-off workers must have been laid off and approved for unemployment compensation sometime since October 1, 2008.

Those who were fired, quit or went on medical leave are not eligible.

People must show they have emergency financial needs and have insufficient personal resources to provide food, clothing and/or shelter.

They must have been laid off or lived in Sedgwick, Butler or Sumner counties when they lost their job.
