A judge Wednesday granted a request to reduce bond for Jake Jacobs, accused of opening fire earlier this month at Burlington Coat Factory’s east Wichita store.

Jacobs, 27, is now held on $50,000 bail, half of the original $100,000 bond, District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Georgia Cole said. He is charged with four counts of aggravated assault for allegedly firing a loaded .38-caliber revolver at a Burlington security guard and pointing the gun at three others Aug. 13.

Jacobs remained in custody at Sedgwick County Jail on Wednesday night, jail records show. If he posts bond, he will have to wear an electronic monitoring device, Cole said.

Jacob’s attorney, Mark Schoenhofer, filed a motion Aug. 15 to lower the bond to $10,000. He later told The Eagle that Jacobs needed surgery to treat a broken jaw and teeth suffered during his client’s arrest.

Schoenhofer said at an Aug. 17 bond hearing that Jacobs would not flee if released because he has family in the area, including a 4-year-old daughter who “stays with him every other week.” The prosecution opposed the proposed $10,000 bond, saying it was too low because Jacobs posed great risk to community members when he opened fire in the store.

Also on Wednesday, Jacobs waived his right to a preliminary hearing, Cole said. His trial is scheduled to start Oct. 22.
