“Visiting Tom” by Michael Perry (Harper, $24.99)

Michael Perry’s octogenarian neighbor, Tom Hartwig, has a jumble of a workshop, a plethora of stories, and an anti-authoritarian streak. Perry pulls his readers into Tom’s life, with photos and anecdotes, lacing them with reflections on Perry’s own life. Celebrating the heart, wisdom and spirit that embodies small-town America, “Visiting Tom” is “Tuesdays With Morrie” meets Bill Bryson. Michael Perry be at Watermark Books at 7 p.m. Sept. 4.

“One Last Thing Before I Go” by Jonathan Tropper (Dutton, $26.95)

Drew Silver used to be the drummer of a one-hit-wonder band. Now, he is middle-aged, divorced, playing at bar mitzvahs and weddings, with a multitude of regrets and complicated relationships. Life becomes more complicated when his daughter confides in him – because he’s the one she cares least about letting down – that she’s pregnant, and he finds that his heart requires emergency, life-saving surgery. He decides against the surgery, choosing to use what time he has left to become a better man. This is Tropper at his funny, insightful, heartbreaking best.
