KU says juco lineman Ty McKinney will miss opener

— KU coach Charlie Weis announced Friday that juco defensive lineman Ty McKinney will finally arrive on campus Sept. 7, the day before KU takes on Rice in its second game of the season.

Kansas has been waiting for McKinney for most of the month. Weis previously said that McKinney, a transfer from Trinity Valley Community College in Texas, needed to take one more final exam before he could complete his juco academic requirements. Despite the late arrival, McKinney will likely still be eligible to play this season.

“This still allows Ty to enroll this fall as a full-time student at KU,” Weis said in a statement. “Our academic support staff is working to create a schedule so that as soon as Ty arrives he can catch up academically.”

The timing of McKinney’s arrival suggests that he would be unlikely to contribute during the Jayhawks’ four games in September. KU, which opens again South Dakota State on Sept. 1, plays host to TCU on Sept. 15 before traveling to Northern Illinois on Sept. 22. The Jayhawks then have an off week before playing at Kansas State on Oct. 6.

“Once his academic situation is in order,” Weis said, “he will get up to speed in football.”

Weis also announced that junior linebacker Jon Shelby has left the team for personal reasons. Shelby is a junior college transfer from Nassau (N.Y.) Community College.

Weis, however, left the door open for a possible return.

“It is important at this time to protect Jon’s privacy,” Weis said. “We hope to have him back at KU sometime in the future.”
