Rob Hendrickson

Senior development manager, New York Life

Hendrickson followed his father into the insurance business, but not right away, and not in the same place.

First he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music, played trombone professionally on a cruise ship and then taught music for four years.

“My father’s been in the insurance business for 30 years,” said Hendrickson, who grew up in Seattle and went into the insurance business in Springfield, Mo.

“I started my own practice far away from his, not entirely on purpose, but I kind of made it on my own.”

That experience helped him decide to move to Wichita to train and provide support for New York Life agents throughout Kansas. The company has about 100 agents in the state, including 40 in south-central Kansas.

“Working through the struggles of not knowing many people, and making it through that, I found myself particularly drawn to training agents,” Hendrickson, 31, said. “I’ve always loved teaching.”

Hendrickson and his wife, Melissa, have two sons: Grant, 3, and Austin, 3 months.

Until they grow older, he won’t be looking to join any bands.

“I kind of have a pact with my wife not to tell anyone I’m musical.”
