Three people remained hospitalized after being injured Sunday evening when a race car crashed through a guardrail at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, and struck them, the Missouri Highway Patrol reported.
Two other people suffered minor injuries from the wreck, which happened during a special charity race at the Pepsi Grandstand at the fairgrounds. The wreck happened at about 9 p.m. when one of the vehicles, an old police car, traveled over a guardrail barrier and through a safety fence. The vehicle then hit five spectators standing behind the fence near the pit area.
The driver, 25-year-old Tyson Russell of Crocker, Mo., was not injured, according to the highway patrol.
The injured spectators were identified as:
• Mark C. Quisenberry, 57, of Columbia, Mo., sustained serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia.
• Lela A. Wood, 34, of California, Mo., was treated for moderate injuries after being taken by helicopter to University Hospital.
• Jessalin A. Degonia, 27, of California, Mo., suffered moderate injuries and was taken by to Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia.
• Barry L. Smith, 46, of Florence, Mo., and Archie L. Simpson, 67, of Columbia, had minor injuries and both were treated at the scene.
Earlier that evening, a 15-year-old driver from Carrollton, Mo., was seriously injured when he lost control of his vehicle and it overturned several times during an earlier race. The crash occurred at about 8:15 p.m. when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. He was taken by helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia.
The Missouri Highway Patrol is continuing to investigation the crashes.
