Property owners in Sumner County will receive a significant cut in their tax bills starting in December as a result of money flowing into the county’s coffers from the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane.

In the 2013 budget adopted this week by the county commissioners, they included a 27 percent reduction in the county property tax rates after receiving more than $1 million from the casino this year through July.

Taxes on a $100,000 home in Sumner County will drop by about $200 a year, commission chairman Cliff Bales said.

Sumner County receives 1 percent of gaming revenue generated by the casino. But since the casino just opened in December, the commissioners didn’t budget any money from the casino in 2012.

“It was just a guess what we’d get,” Sumner County Clerk Debra Norris said.

The county had received $1,078,663 through July, prompting the commissioners to make the adjustment in their $20 million budget for next year. The total mill levy reduction for the county is 17.2, bringing it down to just over 44 mills.

Commissioner Jim Newell said the revenue has brought “much needed and appreciated tax relief.”

The casino is in its first phase of development, which has the gaming area housed in a 5,000-seat arena designed for equestrian and other entertainment events. A permanent casino and a hotel are expected to open in December or early January.
