A 40-year-old Hutchinson man has been arrested in connection with a collision west of Newton on Monday night that killed an Alton man and sent a Hesston man to a Wichita hospital.
The collision occurred at about 9 p.m. when a pickup traveling west on First Street slammed into a Saturn coming north on Ridge Road, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said in a prepared statement. A passenger in the Saturn, 28-year-old Jessie Stroup of Alton, was thrown from the Saturn and died at the scene.
The driver of the Saturn, 52-year-old Donald Nickles of Hesston, was transported to Wesley Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Bryan Reed, the driver of the pickup, was booked into the Harvey County Jail on suspicion of aggravated reckless battery, vehicular homicide, DUI and illegal transportation of an open container, Walton said.
