There should be a contest
Tomato Day may be over, but the entries are still coming in for contests that could have been:
• Grower Look-alike Contest: Teddy Ferrell of Wichita could win this category, for a Beefmaster he grew that weighed more than a pound – and that looks like him.
• Tomatoes in the Shape of Other Objects: Becky Speck of Wichita could win this category for a tomato she thought nothing of until she cut it open – and it was in the shape of a heart. Aw.
Canning workshop
K-State Research & Extension will offer a seminar on canning from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Extension Center, 21st and Ridge Road. The workshop will teach and offer practice in water-bath canning jams, jellies, tomatoes and salsas with proper acidification and adjustment for altitude. The cost is $10; register by calling 316-660-0101.
Update emergency kits
August is a good time to update emergency supplies, Kansas’ state climatologist says. People may want to check and rotate non-perishable foods, beverages, medications and batteries; update documents; and review plans with members of the household, climatologist Mary Knapp says.
