The Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane is beginning the process to hire an additional 400 workers as it moves closer to opening its permanent casino and 150-room-hotel.

It is seeking to hire 40 more dealers and 150 food and beverage workers, as well as adding positions in information technology, purchasing, office staff, customer service, RV park operations, security, grounds maintenance and housekeeping.

Scott Cooper, the casino’s general manager, said in an interview Thursday that 80 percent to 85 percent of the new jobs will be full-time positions. He expects that most of the new hires will come from Wichita and the surrounding area.

“There’s always challenges when you’re trying to find that many people,” he said. “But so far we’re on schedule.”

That casino currently has about 600 employees.

The casino will hold group interviews this month for its third class of dealers school, which will begin in September. The class will last 10 weeks and will include dealers already working at the casino.

The permanent casino will have a gaming floor with more than 1,800 slots and 45 table games. There also will be a 10-table poker room.

The permanent casino also will include a number of restaurants and food service amenities, including a contemporary steakhouse, a sports bar, a 250-seat buffet, a deli and an Asian noodle bar.

The gaming area is currently housed in a 5,000-seat arena designed for equestrian and other entertainment events, such as concerts.

Cooper isn’t committing to a specific opening date for the permanent casino and hotel, but said it could be before the end of the year.

“It won’t be February and it won’t be the end of January,” he said, “which leaves it open to perhaps getting open before the end of the year.

According to the latest information from the Kansas Lottery, Kansas Star earned $14.4 million in revenue in June. Since opening on December 2011, it has earned $98.9 million in revenue.
