Eagle editorial: Exercise right to vote

This hot and bothered campaign season has strained the patience with its dirty politicking, third-party meddling, push-polling and robocalling. At least voters will put a stop to it on Tuesday – those who remember to bring their photo ID to the polls, that is.

Statewide, the big question is whether the moderate Republican state senators will survive a coordinated assault by conservative candidates handpicked and bankrolled by entities aligned with the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Prosperity and Gov. Sam Brownback. If not, the Senate’s traditional temperance and needed independence from Brownback and the conservative-controlled House could be history as well.

In Sedgwick County, Republicans alone will pick the next district attorney and decide five judicial races and one County Commission contest – putting special pressure on them to choose wisely, while regrettably denying any say to the nearly 60 percent of registered Sedgwick County voters who are not Republicans.

Even with the numbers of campaign mailers at deforestation levels this year, it can be hard to know where candidates stand. The 2012 Primary Election Guide that appeared in the July 29 Eagle contained lots of background on the races and candidates. So does the Voter Guide available online at Kansas.com.

A list of The Eagle editorial board’s endorsements in the contested Republican and Democratic primaries follows (full endorsements can be read online at Kansas.com/opinion).

Please exercise the right to vote. And don’t forget that photo ID.
